Hi Ajai,

We should probably put together an architecture document for this,
but in general we would recommend:

- VMs are fine. IXP Manager is not resource intensive and doesn't
need dedicated hardware

- there should be 2 route servers per exchange and they should
each be run on their own physical hardware. INEX has dedicated
hardware for each route server, but we use virtualisation for
management reasons. It means we can handle OS upgrades by
building new VMs offline and then installing them in maintenance
windows, instead of doing a bare-metal operating system upgrade.

- INEX runs ixp manager on ubuntu and freebsd, but it should work
on any platform which supports LAMP.

- if you're running more than ~30 ixp participants at any
particular exchange, you should run the sflow collector box on
separate hardware. We have noticed that the default freebsd
filesystem performance is significantly faster than default linux
ext3 for handling lots of rrd files.

Dear All,
I want to explore the route server and IXP manager at
Exchange in India(NIXI). Currently we have 7 IX nodes. I have
following questions:

The OS(CentOs or Ubuntu ) and server hardware
recommended for it?

Can VMs be used for this?

Should Route server(BIRD) and IXPmanger be installed
in the same server?

Can some one answer for me or link the mailing list
archive.Looking forward for your support please.
